Description
The Phantom anchovy is an anchovy (Engraulidae) from shallow coastal and estuarine water of the western Atlantic off Brazil. The species grows to about 9 cm and has a slender, translucent silvery body with a shiny longitudinal stripe, a pointed snout and a large, inferior mouth. As a social schooling fish it forms dense swarms in the upper layer and filters small zooplankton. It is important food for larger fish and seabirds. The fish is harmless to humans.
