The Tanganyika tilapia (Oreochromis tanganicae) is a freshwater fish of the family Cichlidae that grows up to 42 cm.
Description
The Tanganyika tilapia (Oreochromis tanganicae) is a large tilapia-type cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. The species has a deep, laterally compressed, silvery-grey body and reaches about 42 cm. It is the dominant tilapia species of the lake, even alongside the often-invasive Nile tilapia elsewhere, and usually stays near the lake rather than moving far up inflowing rivers. It grazes the surface film and aufwuchs of sheltered waters and feeds as an omnivore on algae and detritus. Like other Oreochromis species it is a maternal mouthbrooder and of local fishery importance.
