Description

The Chilwa tilapia is a cichlid from fresh and brackish water of Malawi and Mozambique. The species reaches about 39 cm, has a silvery-grey, torpedo-shaped body and inhabits very shallow, densely vegetated shore zones and lagoons; it tolerates a wide temperature range of roughly 23 to 42 degrees. The fish feeds on detritus and phytoplankton and is a maternal mouthbrooder, the female carrying the eggs and larvae in her mouth. The species is a valued food fish and is commercially farmed in ponds and cages in Malawi.
