The blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) is a robust cichlid native to North Africa and the Near East, including the Nile, Jordan, Niger and Senegal. The species has a deep, laterally compressed, blue-grey body and reaches about 45 cm. It is remarkably cold-tolerant and tolerates brackish water, which makes it particularly suitable for farming. It is an omnivore feeding on algae, plankton and detritus. Like other Oreochromis species it is a maternal mouthbrooder. The blue tilapia has been introduced worldwide for aquaculture and has become an invasive species in many areas.
