Description
The black tilapia is an African cichlid (Cichlidae) from southeastern Africa. The species has a fairly deep, dark body that becomes blackish in adults. It prefers quiet pools with marginal vegetation and has been reported only from fresh water and low-altitude waters. As an omnivore it grazes algae, growth, detritus and plant matter. As an Oreochromis it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female broods the eggs and young in her mouth. The species is harmless to humans.
