Description
The Uruguay eartheater is an eartheater cichlid from fresh water of Uruguay and adjacent South America. The species grows to about 9 cm and has a deep, greyish body with glittering spots; adult males often develop a fatty hump on the forehead. As a bottom-dweller it takes mouthfuls of sand and sifts out small invertebrates, larvae and detritus. It is a mouthbrooder. The fish is harmless to humans and is known from the aquarium trade.
