The dark mother-of-pearl eartheater is a cichlid from fresh water of the La Plata basin in southeastern South America. The species grows to about 15 cm and has a deep, greyish body with glittering pearly-blue spots on the head and flanks. As a bottom-dweller it sifts mouthfuls of sand, filtering out small invertebrates and plant material. It is a mouthbrooder. The fish is harmless to humans and is known from the aquarium trade.
