The Speckled deepwater scorpionfish (Pontinus leda) is a saltwater fish of the family Scorpaenidae that grows up to 27 cm.
Description
The scorpionfish is a scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) from the eastern Atlantic Ocean. The species has a stocky, reddish body with a large head set with spines and skin flaps, well camouflaged against the bottom. It lives bottom-bound on soft bottoms of the continental shelf and slope. As an ambush hunter it sucks in passing small fishes and crustaceans in one gulp. Like other scorpionfishes it carries venomous spines in the fins; a sting is very painful.
