It possesses a powerful electric organ with which it can stun prey and defend itself; a true spiny dorsal fin is absent. It is a nocturnal predator feeding on fishes. The species is of local fishery importance and is regularly eaten. The electric shock can be unpleasant to humans but usually causes no lasting injury.
