Description

Oreochromis upembae is a tilapia-type cichlid occurring in the upper Congo (Lualaba) drainage and Lake Upemba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The species has a deep, laterally compressed body and reaches about 21 cm. Like other Oreochromis species it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female broods the eggs and young in her mouth and shelters them there. The fish feeds as an omnivore on algae, detritus and plant material and is locally important for fisheries and as food.
