Description

The emperor cichlid is a cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. The species grows to about 8 cm; dominant males are brilliant metallic blue, females drab brown. As a bottom-oriented hunter it hovers above sandy transition zones and detects small invertebrates in the sediment with sensitive sensory pores on the head. It is a mouthbrooder. The fish is harmless to humans.
