The Schwebisch's tilapia (Oreochromis schwebischi) is a freshwater fish of the family Cichlidae that grows up to 30 cm.
Description
Oreochromis schwebischi is a tilapia-type cichlid from coastal rivers of West and Central Africa, including the Ogowe basin. The species has a deep, laterally compressed body and reaches about 30 cm. It is sometimes territorial and feeds mainly on algae, especially unicellular or in short filaments. Like other Oreochromis species it is an exclusively maternal mouthbrooder: the female broods the eggs and young in her mouth. During breeding the sexes show a marked colour difference and the males spawn on a communal courtship arena. The species is of local fishery importance.
