The Jewel cichlid (Hemichromis bimaculatus) is a freshwater fish of the family Cichlidae that grows up to 15 cm.
Description
The jewel cichlid is a vividly coloured cichlid of the family Cichlidae reaching about 15 cm. The body is red to orange and studded with shiny blue-green 'jewel' spots; one or more dark blotches sit on the flank. In the breeding season both parents turn fiery red. The species comes from the fresh water of West Africa and lives in streams, rivers and swamps with abundant water plants. As a predator it hunts insects, worms, small crustaceans and small fish. It is a substrate brooder: the pair cleans a stone and both parents fiercely guard the eggs and young. For its handsome colours the jewel cichlid is popular in the aquarium hobby, though it is very aggressive when breeding.
