Description
The pike cichlid is a cichlid (Cichlidae) from southern South America. The species has an elongate, pike-like body with a large mouth and a row of dark spots on the flank, plus a conspicuous eyespot on the tail base. It inhabits rivers, streams and bank vegetation, where it lies in wait among cover. As an ambush hunter it springs on small fishes, shrimps and large insects. As a cichlid it is a caring brood-tender. The species is harmless to humans.
