Description

The zebra tilapia is a robust, strikingly marked cichlid from West Africa. The species grows to about 40 cm and has a deep body with alternating broad yellow and black vertical bands, like a zebra. It inhabits rivers, creeks, swamps and lagoons of the coastal lowlands, also in slightly brackish water. As an omnivore it feeds on algae, water plants, detritus and small invertebrates. Cichlids show intensive brood care; this species is territorial and can be aggressive in the breeding season. The zebra tilapia is a local food fish and a popular but pushy aquarium fish. It is harmless to humans.
