It lives bottom-bound in rivers and lakes and is an opportunistic bottom feeder that prefers insects and their larvae, supplemented with other small invertebrates and plant matter. As a haplochromine cichlid it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female broods the eggs in her mouth. The species is harmless to humans.
