Description
The variable tylochromis is a sturdy African cichlid of the family Cichlidae reaching about 28 cm. The laterally compressed, silvery-grey body with a yellow-blue sheen has a strikingly high, round head and large eyes, and spines in the dorsal fin. With its inferior mouth it searches sandy and muddy bottoms for molluscs, insect larvae, small crustaceans, detritus and plant matter. The species comes from the Congo basin in Central Africa and lives in rivers, creeks and lakes with soft bottoms. Like many African cichlids it is a mouthbrooder: the female broods the eggs and young in her mouth. With its size it is locally a valued food fish.
