Description
Tristram's tilapia is a mouthbrooding cichlid from the Jordan system in the Near East, notably the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias) and Muzairib; it has disappeared from Lake Hula. The species grows to about 25 cm. It spawns from March to August and broods the eggs and young in its mouth. The diet consists mainly of phytoplankton and aquatic plants and, to a lesser extent, zooplankton. Owing to decline of its habitat it is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List.
