Description
Tilapia brevimanus is a West African cichlid from rivers and streams of the coastal rainforest. The species reaches about 25 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, brownish body with faint bars. Reproduction is by pair-bonding and open-substrate spawning, with both parents guarding the brood; the species appears to breed year-round and the larvae take about 13 to 14 days to develop from egg to free-swimming stage. Its diet consists of algae, plant matter, detritus and small invertebrates. The species is harmless to humans and is eaten locally on a modest scale.
