Description

Giard's happy is a large cichlid (Cichlidae) from southern Africa, including the Okavango and Zambezi systems. The species has a stocky, pink-silvery body with powerful throat teeth. It prefers deep main river channels and floodplain lagoons with sandy bottoms. It feeds mainly on snails and bivalves, which it crushes with its powerful throat teeth, supplemented with insects. As a cichlid it tends its brood. It is a valued local food fish and is harmless to humans.
