Description

The Betsileo cichlid (Trondo Mainty) is a cichlid endemic to fresh water of the highlands of central Madagascar. The species grows to about 24 cm and has a deep, dark-grey body with powerful jaws. As a bottom-oriented omnivore it lives in rivers and eats molluscs, small invertebrates, fruit and plant material. It is a substrate brooder. Through habitat loss and introduced species the species is critically endangered. The fish is harmless to humans.
