The polystigma is a predatory cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. The species grows to about 23 cm and has a pale-grey body with a pattern of large, dark, leopard-like blotches. It is most common in mixed rock-sand habitats and vegetated areas with Vallisneria and Potamogeton. The species is known for a remarkable hunting technique: it lies on its side and plays dead to lure unwary prey fishes, which it then ambushes. As a maternal mouthbrooder the female carries the eggs and young in her mouth. The species is popular in the aquarium and harmless to humans.
