Description
The Pacific sanddab is a flatfish of the family Paralichthyidae from the eastern Pacific off the west coast of North America. The species grows to about 41 cm and has an oval, flattened body with both eyes on the left side and a brown, mottled pattern that camouflages it perfectly on sand bottoms. It lives on sand bottoms from the coastal zone to deeper water; juveniles stay in very shallow water. As a bottom ambush predator it feeds on small crustaceans, worms and small fishes. The Pacific sanddab is a valued food fish on the American west coast. It is harmless to humans.
