Description
The horned whiff is a small left-eyed flatfish (family Paralichthyidae) of the western Atlantic. The species reaches about 10 cm and has an oval, strongly compressed, brown body with both eyes on the left side and a mottled pattern. It lives on deeper sand and mud bottoms of the continental shelf and upper slope. Its diet consists of small bottom invertebrates and crustaceans. Adult males bear a spine-like projection above the eye, which gives the species its name. It is harmless to humans and, because of its small size, of no fishery value.
