Description
Tylochromis polylepis is a fairly large cichlid from Lake Tanganyika and the lower Congo in Central Africa. The species has a deep, laterally compressed body with many small scales and reaches about 43 cm. Juveniles live gregariously near the shore, while adults wander alone over sandy bottoms, in shallow shoreline zones of the lake, in lagoons and at river mouths. The diet consists mainly of crustaceans and insects, supplemented with some plant matter. The species is of local fishery importance and belongs to a distinct, older branch within the cichlids of Lake Tanganyika.
