The species grows to about 71 cm and has a powerful, streamlined, silvery body with large scales and two pairs of barbels. As an omnivore it eats algae, invertebrates, small fish and plant material. It is part of a species flock of large barbs in Lake Tana and is an important food fish. The fish is harmless to humans.
