Description
Theraps intermedius is a cichlid from fast-flowing rivers of Central America, particularly the Usumacinta basin on the border of Mexico and Guatemala. The species has a streamlined, greenish to silvery body with dark vertical bands and reaches about 20 cm. It is adapted to clear, fast-flowing water with a rocky bottom, where it grazes the algal mat (aufwuchs) from the stones with its mouth. It is a pair-forming substrate spawner: the eggs are laid in the open on a rock and fiercely defended by both parents. Owing to its dependence on flowing water the species is sensitive to disturbance of its habitat.
