Description
The irregular cichlid is a cichlid (Cichlidae) from Central America. The species grows to about 19 cm and has an elongate, laterally compressed body adapted to life in fast-flowing water. It occurs only in the fast-moving, rocky upper reaches of river valleys in the border region of Mexico and Guatemala. There it grazes the aufwuchs: the layer of algae and small invertebrates on stones, from which it obtains its food. As a cichlid it is a caring brood-tender that lays its eggs on a hard substrate and guards them. The species is harmless to humans.
