Description
The highland swordtail is a livebearing toothcarp (Poeciliidae) from fresh water of eastern Mexico. The species grows to about 5 cm and has a slender, yellowish body with a few dark longitudinal lines; males bear an extended, sword-shaped lower tail lobe. It lives in clear mountain streams and eats small invertebrates, algae and detritus. Like related swordtails the female gives birth to live young. The fish is harmless to humans.
