Description
The Cortez swordtail (Xiphophorus cortezi) is a small livebearing fish of the family Poeciliidae from eastern Mexico, particularly the Pánuco basin. The species reaches about 5 cm and has an olive body with a zigzagging dark lengthwise line; the male bears a short sword-like extension on the lower caudal rays. It inhabits fast-flowing, clear waters. As an omnivore it feeds on small invertebrates, insects and algae. Like other swordtails the species reproduces by internal fertilisation and bears live young; the male has an anal fin modified into a copulatory organ (gonopodium). It is of interest for scientific research into heredity and behaviour.
