Description
The red empress is a cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. The species is popular in the aquarium for the beautiful colours of the males, which light up with blue, red and yellow; females are silvery-grey striped. It inhabits shallow, sediment-free rocky habitat. It grazes 'aufwuchs' (algae and small animals) from the rocks, but also picks small invertebrates. It is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates the eggs and larvae in her mouth. The species is harmless to humans.
