Description
The green happy is a cichlid (Cichlidae) from southern Africa, including the Zambezi and Okavango systems. The species has a stocky, greenish-silvery body. It occurs in shallow, heavily vegetated shoreline zones but prefers deep, quiet water, slow-flowing channels and floodplain lagoons. It feeds among other things on water lily (Nymphaea) seeds, snails and other invertebrates, which it crushes with powerful throat teeth. As a cichlid it tends its brood. The species is a food fish and is harmless to humans.
