Description
The fourspot cichlid is a cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. The species grows to about 13 cm and has an elongate body with a few dark spots on the flank; courting males colour up. It inhabits shallow, vegetated areas, where among the water plants it forages on invertebrates such as insect larvae and small crustaceans. It is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates the eggs and larvae in her mouth. The species is popular with aquarists and is harmless to humans.
