The species grows to about 12 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, silvery body with a conspicuous oblique dark band running from the mouth to the dorsal fin. It lives in lakes and swamps of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, often among overhanging vegetation and roots. As an omnivore it feeds on plant matter, algae, insects and small invertebrates. It is a caring brood-tender that lays its eggs on a leaf or branch. It is locally eaten smoked and is popular in the aquarium hobby. The species is harmless to humans.
