Description
The flag cichlid is a South American cichlid from the Amazon and surrounding drainages. The species grows to about 12 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, silvery body with a conspicuous dark oblique band running from the snout through the eye to the upper tail base. It inhabits quiet bank and creek zones with overhanging vegetation and tree roots, often near sandy shores. As an omnivore it feeds on insects, small invertebrates, algae and plant matter. The flag cichlid forms pairs and lays its brood on leaves or branches just below the water surface. It is popular in the aquarium and is harmless to humans.
