Description
The eel catfish is an eel-shaped catfish (Clariidae) from the rapids of the lower Congo in Central Africa. The species has a very elongate, eel-like, scaleless body with strongly reduced fins, small eyes and barbels. It lives concealed in rock crevices of the raging rapids and can gulp air with an accessory breathing organ. Probing by touch, it searches for insect larvae and small invertebrates. The stout pectoral fin spines can give a puncture wound when handled.
