Description

The blue-eye cichlid (Cryptoheros spilurus) is a small cichlid from Central America. The species has a stocky, beige to greenish body with a few dark cross-bars, a spot at the tail base and conspicuously blue eyes, and reaches about 12 cm. It inhabits lakes and rivers and prefers shallow shoreline zones over sand, mud and rock bottoms in the calmer lower reaches. As an omnivore it feeds on algae, plant matter and small invertebrates. It is a pair-forming substrate spawner that lays the eggs on a surface and guards them with both parents. Owing to its calm temperament the species is popular in the aquarium trade.
