The Louka tilapia (Coptodon louka) is a brackish-water fish of the family Cichlidae that grows up to 25 cm.
Description
Coptodon louka is a tilapia-type cichlid from coastal waters of West Africa. The species has a deep, laterally compressed body and reaches about 25 cm. It seems to prefer brackish areas and coastal lagoons and probably tolerates high salinity levels. It is a mainly plant-eating species feeding on algae and plant matter. Unlike the mouthbrooding tilapias, this is a pair-forming, open substrate spawner: the eggs are laid in the open on a surface and guarded by both parents. The species is of local fishery importance and contributes to the diversity of West African cichlids.
