Description

The oscar is a large, robust cichlid from the Amazon basin in South America. The species grows to about 45 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed body with a marbled pattern and a conspicuous orange-ringed eyespot on the caudal peduncle. It prefers quiet, shallow waters with mud or sand bottoms in canals and ponds. As a predator it feeds on small fishes, crayfish, worms and insect larvae. Parent pairs jointly guard the eggs and young. The oscar is a very popular aquarium fish worldwide. It is harmless to humans.
