Description
The vieja is a sand bass (Serranidae) from shallow rocky and reef water of the southern Caribbean Sea around northern South America. The species grows to about 40 cm and has a stocky, brown-grey mottled body with a large mouth. As a bottom-oriented ambush predator it shelters among rocks and seizes small fish, crustaceans and squid. It is a valued food fish. The fish is harmless to humans.
