Description
The thick-lipped cichlid is a cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. The species grows to about 12 cm and has an elongate body and conspicuously thick, fleshy lips with which it sucks prey from crevices in the rocky reef. Using these specialised lips it forms a seal around cavities and takes invertebrates. It lives solitarily along rocky shores. The fish is harmless to humans and is sometimes caught for the aquarium trade. The IUCN assesses the species as Least Concern (LC).
