The species grows to about 6 cm and has a stocky, silver-brown body with a row of dark spots on the flank, an inferior mouth and short barbels. As a bottom-dweller it searches over sand and mud of rivers and ponds for insect larvae, worms and plant matter. The fish is harmless to humans.
