Description
The Spotted checkerboard cichlid is a dwarf cichlid (Cichlidae) from blackwater streams of the central Amazon basin in Brazil. The species grows to about 5 cm; males bear a chessboard-like pattern and a lyre tail, females are smaller. A row of large dark blotches runs along the flank. As a bottom-dweller it shelters among leaf litter and roots in soft, acidic water and snaps at small invertebrates. The fish is harmless to humans and is popular in the aquarium trade.
