Description
The spectacled cichlid is a predatory cichlid from fresh water of the Amazon basin in South America. The species grows to about 19 cm and has a deep, yellow-green body with dark blotches and, remarkably, a highly protrusible mouth with which it sucks in prey like a catapult. As an ambush predator it hunts small fish and large invertebrates in plant-rich water. It is a parental brooder. The fish is harmless to humans.
