Description
The so-iuy mullet is a large mullet of the family Mugilidae from the north-western Pacific, originally from the coastal waters and river mouths of East Asia. The species grows to about 60 cm and has a streamlined, silvery body with reddish-tinted lips. As a euryhaline species it tolerates strongly varying salinities and moves freely between sea, brackish water and rivers. It feeds on detritus, algae and small bottom organisms gathered from soft bottoms. The so-iuy mullet is an important food and aquaculture fish and has been successfully introduced to the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea and has spread to the Aegean Sea. It is harmless to humans.
