Description
The sailfin pleco is a large armoured catfish (Loricariidae) from fresh water of the Amazon basin in South America. The species grows to about 40 cm and has a bony-plated, brown-marbled body, a large, sail-like dorsal fin and an inferior sucker mouth. As a bottom-dweller it clings to wood and stones of rivers and rasps algae, biofilm and detritus; in the dry season it can gulp air and burrow into the bank. The fish is harmless to humans.
