Description
The ringtail pike cichlid is an elongate, pike-like cichlid of the family Cichlidae reaching about 20 cm. The torpedo-shaped body has a large mouth, a dark lengthwise stripe along the flank and a conspicuous eyespot on the tail base. The species comes from the fresh water of northern South America and lives in slow, densely vegetated water of rivers and creeks. As an ambush predator it lurks among plants and roots and strikes at small fish, shrimps, insects and crustaceans. It is a substrate brooder: the pair cleans a shelter and both parents guard the eggs and young. For its size and behaviour it is popular in the aquarium hobby.
