Description

The Madagascar rapids cichlid is a unique cichlid and the only species of the genus Oxylapia, endemic to Madagascar. It occurs exclusively in the fast-flowing rapids of the Nosivolo River near Marolambo. The species reaches about 13 cm and has an elongate, streamlined body adapted to life in strongly flowing water. It grazes aufwuchs, algae and small invertebrates from the rocky bottom. It is a substrate brooder. Through its very restricted range and the threat to its river habitat the species is assessed by the IUCN as endangered (EN).
