The species grows to about 50 cm and has an elongate, silvery body with large scales and an inferior mouth with thick, fleshy lips bearing a characteristic notch. As a bottom-dweller it sucks up worms, insect larvae, snails and detritus over sand and gravel bottoms. The fish is harmless to humans.
