The species grows to about 29 cm and has a streamlined, pink to silvery body with yellowish tints; the upper tail lobe often extends into a short filament. It lives on sand and mud bottoms of coastal waters and forms small groups. As a bottom predator it feeds on fishes, crustaceans, molluscs and polychaete worms. The notchedfin threadfin bream is an important commercial fish frequently taken by trawling. It is harmless to humans.
